Ossie Clark (1942-1996) Multicolour Python Skin Jacket, circa 1968 green, orange, yellow, blue and red python skin patchwork jacket, cropped design with zip down front labelled size 10, chest 31in/80cm, waist 27in/68cm, 19in/47cm long Footnotes: Raymond 'Ossie' Clark was an influential fashion figure in 1960s and 1970s London. He rose to prominence after graduating from the Royal College of Art, and then reached greater fame designing with his girlfriend and later wife, Celia Birtwell (b. 1941); their relationship is immortalised in the 1970-71 large-scale acrylic painting, Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy by their friend, David Hockney. Their designs epitomised the swinging sixties and were popular with celebrities of the day, from Mick Jagger to Jane Birkin. Despite being largely remembered for his chiffon dresses of mixed prints, in the mid-60s Clark started creating python and watersnake pieces after discovering the leftover fabric in a warehouse. Marianne Faithfull and Sharon Tate were both photographed wearing snakeskin Ossie Clark jackets. Following his divorce from Birtwell in 1974, Clark continued to design, seeing varying success up until his death in 1996. His legacy, however, lives on through his portrait, his designs, and the continued popularity of his pieces.
