LAWRENCE (D.H.) The Rainbow, FIRST EDITION, half-title, 4pp. of advertisements, publisher's dark blue-green cloth, gilt lettering and decoration on spine, red date stamp ('6 Oct. 1915') inside lower cover, pictorial dust-jacket with design by Frank Wright (some wear to folds with small losses at corners, minor loss at spine ends touching the 'N' of 'Methuen' at lower margin and with short tear to the 'E' of 'The' at upper margin, upper margin of upper cover frayed with small area of loss above title), preserved in solander box [Roberts A7a], 8vo, Methuen, [1915] Footnotes: A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION IN THE RARE DUST-JACKET. Published on 30 September 1915 at 6s., 'the first printing consisted of 2500 copies, of which the majority, presumably, were destroyed as a result of the court action against the book' (Roberts). Five weeks after publication, action was taken against the book at the instigation of the National Purity League under the Obscene Publications Act, with the judgement demanding that copies held by the publisher be destroyed.
