SUFFRAGETTES – PANKHURSTS & THE WSPU Two typed letters and one autograph letter, from Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst and Emmeline Pethick Lawrence to Mrs A.A. and Mrs Charles Lovegrove, the first typed and signed ('Christabel Pankhurst') thanking her and her husband for agreeing to ask newly elected MP's to ballot for the Women's Enfranchisement Bill ('...getting this important promise to ballot from Members is largely a question of pressure...') and informing her that an important issue of the paper is coming up ('...it contains a description by Lady Constance Lytton of her experience in prison... in order that the truth as to the suffering undergone by the prisoners may be more widely known...'); the second typed and signed ('Emmeline Pethick Lawrence') sending Mrs Lovegrove a receipt for her friends subscription to Votes for Women with autograph note thanking her for introducing her friend to the movement written below; the third an autograph letter signed ('E. Pankhurst') thanking her for her donation despite her recent financial losses, all on WSPU headed notepaper, docketed in pencil, 4 pages, dust-stained, discoloured and frayed at edges, small tears, first letter of 2 pages joined with old tape, 4to (252 x 202mm.), Clement's Inn, Strand and Lincoln's Inn House, W.C., 31 January and 15 February 1910, 11 November 1912; with an autograph letter signed ('Sarah Grand') on National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies Tunbridge Wells Branch headed paper regarding the War Relief Fund (4) Footnotes: These letters derive from a collection formed over two generations by the great grandfather of the present owner, Marcus Davis, an eminent dental surgeon recorded in the Royal Blue Book for 1885 at 18 George Street, Hanover Square.
