BRUNEL (ISAMBARD KINGDOM) Autograph letter signed ('IK Brunel'), to Walter Shelley ('Sir'), beginning '...Your suggestion is worth consideration but I do not think that the present is a good time...', going on '...we are now thinking only of which is essential – there will be time after she is launched and made a trip or two... to prepare for the long voyages for which [...] your idea is applicable...', pencilled docket at head, 3 pages on a bifolium, dust-staining, marks, creased at folds, remains of mounts on verso, 8vo (182 x 110mm.), [n.p.], 2 May [18]57 Footnotes: 'THERE WILL BE TIME AFTER SHE IS LAUNCHED': BRUNEL ON A PROPOSAL FOR A THEATRE ON THE S.S. GREAT EASTERN. Our letter is Brunel's response to a letter from Walter Shelley, a self-styled '...popular provincial Tragidean...', proposing the idea for a theatre on board the Great Eastern. Brunel's polite but firm reply ('...we are now thinking of only which is essential...') elicited a further response from Shelley which is documented in Brunel's letter-book, one of six volumes compiled during the project and held at the Brunel Institute, Bristol (DM1306/11/1/4/folio 331). Shelley promptly wrote back on 3 May from Gower Place, London, pleading for an interview so that he could better explain himself, going on to explain his straightened circumstances and that Brunel's acceptance of his plan would greatly assist 'one out of sorts with fortune', reminding Brunel at the same time that the scheme was his idea (see Emma Howell, 'Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Letter-Books and the S.S. Great Eastern', Bristol Special Collections website). Provenance: Marcus Davis (1858-1923); thence by descent.
