Smith worked at Heal's for nearly a decade, during which time she became romantically involved with Heal whilst he helped her get her plays staged. In 1940 Smith married another Heal's colleague, Alec Beesley, but remained close to Ambrose Heal (Heal's web site blog, 'Dodie Smith: Heal's toy buyer, novelist and Dalmatian devotee').
