SMITH (DODIE) The Hundred and One Dalmations, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY inscribed 'To Ambrose Heal, with love from Dodie Smith, Finchingfield, Essex, November 1956', publisher's cloth, dust-jacket (price-clipped, spine sunned, a few short tears at edges without loss, small chips to 2 lower corners), 8vo, Heinemann, 1956 Footnotes: PRESENTED TO HER LOVER Ambrose Heal, the founder of Heal's department store. Smith worked at Heal's for nearly a decade, during which time she became romantically involved with Heal whilst he helped her get her plays staged. In 1940 Smith married another Heal's colleague, Alec Beesley, but remained close to Ambrose Heal (Heal's web site blog, 'Dodie Smith: Heal's toy buyer, novelist and Dalmatian devotee').
