ROYAL NAVY - CRIMEA Archive of material relating to First Lieutenant Horatio Guy Campbell (1839-1870), R.N., comprising: i) Diary 'Bought at Malta/ Oct. 1855', with daily entries describing his voyage to the Crimea via the sights of Constantinople ('...I bought in the Bazaar a pair of embroidered slippers and also saw the tomb of the Sultan Mahumoud...'), the Black Sea ('...called Black from the colour of its waters...'), arrival at a busy Balaklava Harbour ('...A great number of vessels lying outside. It is like being outside a huge perpendicular wall whose base is washed by the sea. All the transports waiting to get in are laying to under steam... heard a good deal of firing... we saw a reflection in the sky as if there were some conflagration at Sebastopol...'), journey to Sebastopol ('...Some parts of the road were literally paved with shot and splinters of shells...'), at Redan a month after the battle ('...[the Russians] kept blazing away all day... we did not see the English flag run up, as the French had the tricolor at the Malakoff... The Redan is a good deal knocked about...'), and life on board ('...Ship full of fleas etc... In great despair of getting a wash...'), with ownership inscription, 183 numbered pages, dust-staining and marks, g.e., green calf, worn, outer covers detached, 8vo (155 x 98mm.) Malta and Crimea, 1 October 1855 to 13 February 1856; with typescript transcription; ii) Journal written whilst with HMS Caesar, beginning with social life at Portsmouth, a few month's sojourn in Lisbon (dinners, opera, attending mass for the late queen, etc.), poor weather en route home ('...pitching and rolling a great deal...'), leave of absence in Scotland and Yorkshire, on HMS Blenheim at Portland and Lymington, some of latter part in code regarding a secret assignation, description of Kingston Lacy, etc., 172 pages on ruled paper, dust-staining and marks, quarter calf, marbled boards, worn, lacking spine, 4to (250 x 200mm.), 5 September 1856 to July 1860; iii) Collection of c.260 small portraits of soldiers in uniform by Campbell, some on horseback, some annotated on reverse with names of battles and medals won, some printed cut-outs coloured in watercolour, others pencil and watercolour, on blue paper, postcards or trade cards, c.85 x 140mm. and smaller, held in three modern albums; iv) Commission signed 'Victoria RI', appointing Horatio Guy Campbell to First Lieutenant, 260 x 370mm. including frame, St James's, 2 December 1857; with group of coloured portrait photographs, one framed (small quantity) Footnotes: A collection of items from the career of First Lieutenant Horatio Guy Campbell (1839-1870) who was commissioned in the Royal Marines in December 1857. According to his diary he was in the Crimea just after the siege of Sebastopol and the battle of Redan, and another journal describes a naval life nearer home.
