ROYAL CONNECTION: a Victorian silver nutmeg grater plus one other Jane Pinnell, London 1852 Plain oval form, the hinged cover with a Royal armorial, opening to reveal a fixed grater, the base hinged, together with a George III silver nutmeg grater, Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson, London 1790, oblong-shaped with canted corners, the hinged cover featuring a cartouche with script monogram 'ELB' and bright-cut engraving, length total cm, weight 3.5oz. (2) Footnotes: Property of a Private Collector This armorial has a royal connection and is likely to have been used in one of the royal households. The blazon of the crest: on an imperial crown proper a lion statant or imperially crowned (The Royal Crest). The personal identifying feature is the coronet. On this occasion it appears to be a royal coronet and as a result the engraving would relate to the household of possibly one of the Princes or Princesses of the Monarch (Queen Victoria). Her eldest child was born in 1840 and this makes it unlikely that they would have their own household, at the time of assay (1852). There are very few remaining issue from earlier monarchs so we can probably assume that the household would have been that of Queen Victoria and the item came from a royal palace.
