George III Inlaid Mahogany and Pine Tall Case Clock, James Howden (movement), Edinburgh, Scotland, c. 1800. Weight-driven eight-day movement with striking bell, the arched door opening onto sheet brass clockface with calendar ring, iron hands and seconds bit, ormolu decoration applied to spandrels, and plaque engraved 'Ja. Howden / EDINBURGH' inside the engraved lunette aperture. The movement enclosed by an inlaid mahogany hood crested by broken pediment centering a cut-out plinth, the tympanum inlaid with incised and painted satinwood, all projecting over front of pine roof pitched to conform with arched clockface and back of tall case, mahogany sides of hood are both glazed with printed and frosted stained glass panels, the boards double-tenoned to the base frame, which has ogee molding applied to front and returns deep enough to support full columns at front corners and engaged quarter-round columns at the rear. The hood rests on still deeper coved molding of carved mahogany applied to mahogany-veneered deal waist with engaged fluted columns on band-inlaid plinths joined at front corners, flanking flame mahogany-veneered waist door with ornate arched form outlined in stringing and cross-banding, recessed in molding over a rectangular base inlaid with satinwood and paint-decorated with feathery fan motifs at corners of string-inlaid border, all raised on short bracket base, includes two weights, winding key, and brass eagle finial, (imperfections), 53cm wide, 25cm deep, 218cm high (21 1/4in wide, 10 1/4in deep, 86in high).
