Movado. A stainless steel manual wind triple calendar wristwatch Reference: 1012 Date: Circa 1940 Movement: Jewelled manual wind Dial: Black Case: Polished round Strap/Bracelet: Associated brown leather Buckle/Clasp: Associated steel buckle Signed: Case, dial & movement Size: 33mm Footnotes: Back of the watch bears the following inscription: M.D.L. 21.11.41 10.9.43 30.11.43 S.D.S. The current watch, once owned by Sydney Charles Fane de Salis, was later exchanged with Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Lister MC. It was then gifted to the consigner's father. The inscribed dates on the watch marked pivotal moments in the wartime experiences of both Sydney de Salis, a Second Lieutenant of the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and Colonel Lister, who was Commanding Officer of multiple commando units during World War II. The first date signifies their capture and subsequent internment in a Prisoner of War camp in Italy. The second date denotes their escape from captivity, while the third marks their triumphant arrival in Switzerland, having evaded their captors. The two men later exchanged watches to commemorate their remarkable escape.
