[ALBERTI (JOHANN CHRISTOPH LUDWIG)] Zuid-Afrikaansche Gezichten, drop-head title single letterpress with descriptive text in Dutch, 4 hand-coloured aquatint plates engraved by Ludwig Portman after drawings by Jacob Smies and Christopher Howen, WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOUR VERSION OF ONE OF THE PLATES (see footnote), original stitching holes in left-hand margins, light spotting to text leaf, loose in morocco-backed solander box [Mendelssohn 1, p.18], oblong folio (450 x 600mm.), [Amsterdam, E. Maaskamp, 1810] Footnotes: The scarce album of 4 fine aquatint plates issued to accompany Alberti's De Kaffers aan de Zuidkust van Afrika. Included with the lot is a fine original watercolour, with the caption in Dutch below and numeral 'No. 16' above, of one of the prints depicting the meeting of Governor Janssens meeting the Kaffir chief Gaika at the Kat River in May 1803. We have been unable to ascertain if this is the original watercolour design for the print, or a very good early copy.
