KUSAKABE (KIMBEI) An album of 50 portraits, trades and views, hand-coloured albumen prints, mounted one per page recto and verso, images 150 x 225mm., all captioned in pencil English on mount, one view with loss to one corner, some spotting to mounts, photographer's stamp ('K. Kimbei, Photographer, Honcho-Dori, Yokohama') inside upper cover, contents loose, contemporary pictorial lacquered boards, detached and without spine, large oblong 8vo (180 x 268mm.), [1880s] Footnotes: Album of photographs by Kusakabe Kimbei, 'an exceptional artist and photographer' (Terry Bennett, Photography in Japan 1853-1912, 2006), who had worked as an for to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried before establishing his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. Includes 19 'portrait' or group studies, including a Samurai, tattooed man, women playing checkers, eating rice, sleeping, whipping cotton, letter writing, and displaying their obi, a girl in 'snow costume' and in 'wind costume', and others. Several groups of trades (fishermen, cutting rice, shell picking), and views including Tokyo, Kyoto, Nikko, Enoshima, Yokohama, Nakasendo, and Mt. Fuji.
