WHALING, SOUTH GEORGIA HAY (ARTHUR EDWARD) and others. A series of approximately 92 views of whaling, and the whaling station at Prince Olav Harbour, South Georgia, mostly taken by Arthur Edward ('Eddie') Hay, gelatin silver, some with evidence of old mounting on verso, a couple laid down on card, most either captioned in ink/pencil (some 'P.O.H.') or with printed label on verso, various sizes, including approx. 155 x 115mm. (43), variable toning, approx. 90 x 140mm. (18), approx. 110 x 70mm. (31), [1920-30s]; and 6 others, including 5 photographs by Stewart Bale of Liverpool, 235 x 290mm. of the conversion of the 'Southern Princess, Dunedin, NZ' into a factory ship at Cammel Laird in 1928 (c.98) Footnotes: A scarce group of photographs taken at Prince Olav Harbour whaling station, South Georgia in the 1920s, including view of the factory, whaling ships and machinery, whales (one of seven foetuses taken from one blue whale), and other scenes. includes one with stamp of the 'Southern Studio. Foto. Magn. Himberg, Prince Harbour, South Georgia'. Provenance: Arthur Edward Hay (1902-1993), who from 1922 until 1935 was the technical engineer to the Southern Whaling and Sealing Company, spending nine months of most years based at Prince Olav Harbour, the northernmost station on South Georgia. During Hay's time with Southern Whaling he 'travelled on factory ships engaged in pelagic whaling, voyaging as far as Enderby Land to the east and along the Antarctic Peninsula in the west' (R. Lewis-Smith, Obituary, C.U.P. online); gifted by Hay to Dr. Ronald Lewis-Smith, who organised for some of Hay's cine films to be archived at the Scott Polar Research Institute, and also for the mountain behind the Prince Olav Station to be named 'Hay Peak' in his honour.
