CUNNINGHAM (JOSEPH DAVEY) A History of the Sikhs, from the Origin of the Nation to the Battles of the Sutlej, second edition 'with the author's last corrections and additions', 2 hand-coloured engraved maps (one folding 'shewing... the political divisions of the Punjab &c. after the Treaties of 1846'), one folding letterpress genealogical tree of the Gurus, contemporary red calf gilt, spine elaborately tooled within raised bands, g.e., small holes to spine (with loss of 'The'), 8vo, John Murray, 1853 Footnotes: 'SUCH A VALUABLE BOOK' (ODNB), in which the author's 'main endeavour was to give Sikhism its place in the general history of humanity, by showing its connection with the different creeds of India... [and] to give some account of the connection of the English with the Sikhs... [It has] been remarked by some public critics and private friends, that the Author leans unduly towards the Sikh...' (Preface). Cunningham (1812-51) went to India in 1834 as chief engineer of Bengal Presidency in 1834, and from 1837 spent eight years as the assistant of Colonel Wade, the political agent for the Sikhs.
