DANIELL (THOMAS AND WILLIAM) A Picturesque Voyage to India; by the Way of China, 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates within wash borders, ALL ON STIFF CARD, a little light spotting and toning, mounted on guards, text watermarked 1808, modern half morocco over marbled boards, spine with all-over tooling and raised bands [Abbey Travel 516; Tooley 173; Colas 797; Lipperheide 1523; Mendelssohn I, p. 413; ], oblong 4to bound as folio (350 x 252mm.), Thomas Davison for Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and W. Daniell, 1810 Footnotes: 'A collection of beautifully coloured engravings illustrating places and scenes of interest on the voyage from Gravesend to China and India' (Mendelssohn). Leaving England on the Indiaman Atlas in April 1785, the Daniells arrived in China in August, where they spent several months before sailing onwards to India. Amongst the plates are 24 of Chinese interest, including views of Macao, Canton, Whampoa and Hotun on the Canton river, general views of Chinese vessels, and the dress of the inhabitants. Other views include Madeira, Java, Malay, and Cape of Good Hope. Provenance: John Elphinstone, 13th Lord Elphinstone (1807-1860), Governor of Madras 1837-1842 and Governor of Bombay 1853-1859, small circular bookplate.
