U Ba Thet (1903-1972) A busy market scene signed and indistinctly dated 'BA THET/38' (lower left) watercolour and pencil 31.5 x 39.4cm (12 3/8 x 15 1/2in). Footnotes: Ba Thet is widely regarded as being a master of Burmese art. Having never attained any formal training, he acquired his skills through seeing and doing, and as such it is widely believed that this encouraged his experimental approach to making. After trying his hand at specialisms such as goldsmithing, Ba Thet focused his attention to painting, producing several watercolours like his works on offer in this sale. Ba Thet honed his painting skills through informal training with artists such as Saya Saung, and as a result was amongst one of the first Burmese painters to produce works in the western style. He continued to paint in this way until the 1990s when he started creating more unusual works that have been suggested to be a path of rebellion against British watercolour painting.
