BREYNE (JACOB) Prodromi fasciculi rariorum plantarum primus et secundus... accedunt icones rariorum et exoticarum plantarum, engraved portrait of the author, 33 engraved botanical plates, light browning, spotting and off-setting, old small paper tabs (repaired with archival paper) at fore-margin of 10 leaves, text underlined in ink by an early owner (?Lorenz Heister) on some leaves with a few annotations, contemporary half calf over marbled boards, gilt morocco lettering label and old paper label on spine, joints worn, preserved in morocco-backed fleece-lined solander box [Nissen BBI 223; Stafleu TL2 753], 4to, Danzig, T.J. Schreiber for J.P. Breyne, 1739 Footnotes: RARE, WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. Breyne's Prodromi provides the first accounts of a number of South African and Asian species. Based on two earlier works (1680 and 1689) this work was considerably enlarged by the author's son Johann, who contributed two articles on ginseng, and several species of Ceylonese plants. The portrait and 26 of the plates are new to this edition. Provenance: Lorenz Heister (1683-1758), inscription on title ('L. Heisterus') and bookplate ('Ex Bibliotheca Laurentii Heisterii'); 'Natur W. Museum in Basel', stamp on verso of title.
