Daniel Thomas Egerton (British, 1797-1842) Fisherfolk and boats on a beach, thought to be in Dorset signed and dated 'D.T.Egerton/1837 (lower left) oil on board 23.2 x 33cm (9 1/8 x 13in). Footnotes: Provenance Mr. O. T. Norris of Tilgate Forest Lodge, Sussex. Private collection, Italy (gifted to the current owner's family by the above in the early 70s, thence by descent). Egerton was already an established artist in London when he left for Mexico in 1831, perhaps disillusioned with life in London and/or attracted by opportunity to explore new places for his work. He spent five years travelling through Mexico recording his findings through sketches. Upon his return from Mexico in 1836, he developed some of these sketches into a limited series of thirteen large scale oils and watercolours, which were exhibited at the Society of British Artists between 1838-1840. The same scenes would also be depicted in his set of lithographs published in 1840 under the title Egerton's Views in Mexico; being a series of twelve coloured plates executed by himself from the original drawings, accompanied with a short description. This print series would prove hugely popular and went towards funding his next trip to Mexico in the same year. The present work is dated a year after Egerton's return to England and depicts a view thought to be along the coast of Dorset. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
