PONTING (HERBERT) 'The 'Terra Nova' at the Ice Foot, Cape Evans', large green-tinted carbon print, mounted, small abrasion lower left, on original board, 'H.G. Ponting Copyright' blind-stamp lower right, Fine Art Society printed label (with title caption and exhibition number '27' in ink) on verso of mount with pencil note 'Aitkin, Birmingham', 740 x 585mm., [16 January, 1911] Footnotes: One of Ponting's most iconic images, showing the Terra Nova besides the the ice at Cape Evans. Scott had discovered the Cape during his Discovery expedition of 1901-4, and on his return in 1910 built the expedition hut there. The Fine Art Society mounted the first public exhibition of Ponting's photographs at their gallery in New Bond Street, London on 4 December 1913, displaying 146 images, and generating some 680 orders. They were available in four sizes, the present sample being the largest exhibition format.
