John Gully (New Zealand, 1819-1888) Towards Awatere signed and dated 'JOHN GULLY/1866' (lower left) watercolour heightened with white 72.4 x 129.5cm (28 1/2 x 51in). Footnotes: Provenance Anon. sale, Watson's Auctioneers, Christchurch, 2 April 2008, lot 113 (as 'Looking Towards the Awatere Valley', size given incorrectly as 74 x 186.6cm.) (NZD 65,253). With Merivale Fine Arts, Christchurch, New Zealand. Private collection, UK (acquired from the above in August 2008), thence by descent to the current owner. Possibly to be identified with one of the eight Awatere Valley subjects listed by John Sidney Gully (great great grandson of the artist) in his catalogue of works (J.S. Gullly, New Zealand's Romantic Landscape: Paintings by John Gully, Wellington, 1984, pp.149 and 174, GM/14, 'Rain Coming On - The Valley of the Awatere').
