HONG KONG AND JAPAN - PHOTOGRAPHY Two nineteenth century albums of views of Hong Kong and Kowloon (60), and Japan (40, including 9 'native types'), together 100 albumen prints (200 x 265mm.), one signed in negative Griffiths & Co. (mostly unattributed), mounted one per page, pencil captions in margin of one album, tissue guards (a few missing), contemporary morocco-backed pictorial lacquer and gilt bindings (upper covers with views of Mount Fuji, one with ivory/bone onlays; lower covers with insect and plants motifs), gilt lettered 'Hong Kong and Japan' on spines), g.e., one (fine condition) housed in original pictorial cloth fabric-lined box, one spine rubbed, oblong folio (260 x 350mm.), c.1880-1890 (2) Footnotes: Finely presented albums, including 60 views of Hong Kong and Kowloon, and 40 of Japan and its types. The Hong Kong views include fine views of Queen's Street, the Harbour, St. Peter's Church and the Sailor's Home, Dent's Fountain and Beaconsfield Arcade, race tracks, cricket ground and St. John's Cathedral, Pedder Street and Clock Tower, Kennedy's Horse Repository, grand private houses in hills, dry rivers with stone work, inland Kowloon, Chinese village, warehouse and factories, Lin Fan Kung in Causeway Bay, groups of European males (3), and others, many of which are seemingly rare. The Japan views include 10 groups and types figure groups (Ainu, coolies, woman and baby, composite of baby faces, etc.), and views of Tokyo, Nikko, Yokohama (one captioned 'our home in Yokohama'), and elsewhere. This lot contains ivory and has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10). Ref. EURDUMYN. Provenance: Collected by the current owner's great great uncle.
