In the Years One Thousand and Seven Hundred and Seventy-Seven, Eight and Nine, FIRST EDITION, 17 HAND-COLOURED PLATES, folding engraved map, without pp. vii-viii as usual, title toned, long tear without loss to p.161/2, some off-setting (mostly from plate to text), spotting to the map, modern half calf [Mendelssohn II, pp.143-2] 4to (295 x 230mm.), J. Johnson, 1789 Footnotes: Patersons's Narrative was 'one of the first in English to describe the interior to South Africa' (Howgego). A Scottish botanist and military officer, Paterson had been sent to the Cape of Good Hope to collect plants for the Countess of Strathmore, and 'although the principal feature of the work is a description of the botanical specimens collected and noted... there are many interesting notes respecting the natives, with a few remarks on the Dutch Colonists' (Mendelssohn).
