AUSTEN LEIGH, JAMES EDWARD. 1798-1874. A Memoir of Jane Austen, with two autograph letters. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1906. Later printing, small 8vo, publisher's dark-red cloth, title and author gilt to spine. Covers bumped, rubbed and stained, frontispiece missing. With two letters apparently from J. E. Austen Leigh to a Mrs. Lock, one pasted to the ffep and the other to the rear pastedown. The former, dated December 21 with no year, at 'Kingscote,' reads in part, 'Should your daughter in law ever come to stay with you, will you bring her to see me? I will show her some of Aunt Jane's needlework -- a baby's cap made I think for my father. The Vicar of Grantchester has a bedspread made by Aunt Jane's mother!' The other letter is dated December 2, no year, with letterhead reading '1, Cranmer Road, Cambridge.' The handwriting is shaky and differs from Austen Leigh's attested handwriting.
