An especially rare copy of E.B. White’s first book with fun inscription and familial provenance. The book features a collection of advertisements written and photographed anonymously by E. B. White and first published inThe New Yorker. The mannequins featured were from Wanamaker’s Department Store. According to White, the book was produced in-house byThe New Yorker advertising department to be sent to potential clients. Like many of White’s contributions forThe New Yorker, his name never appeared in the ads. White has also penciled in John Hanrahan’s name under the “Prologue and Epilogue” titles indicating his authorship of those pieces. The exact number of copies produced of this edition is unknown; it is a presumed very small run.
E.B. White (American, 1899-1985)
White attended Cornell University before pursuing a career in journalism. He worked for the United Press and theSeattle Times before finding a position with The New Yorker magazine, where he stayed for the rest of his career. In addition to his day job, White took on additional projects, including writing his own successful books for young readers, such as “Stuart Little”, “Charlotte’s Web”, and “The Trumpet of the Swan”. During his lifetime, White was awarded the National Medal for Literature.
Condition
Minimal wear to boards, with bumping to corners and tiny losses. The green cloth spine has light fraying at head and foot. The text block has separated from front board, and the rear board starting to separate. The pages are very clean.
