Henry David Thoreau (American, 1817-1862)
Thoreau is best remembered for his philosophical and naturalist writings, encouraging a return to nature. After graduating Harvard University, Thoreau struggled to find direction for a time. When Thoreau befriended Ralph Waldo Emerson, he was exposed to Transcendentalism. Emerson ingratiated Thoreau into the movement, introducing him to many key members and authors. In 1845, Thoreau built himself a small home on Walden Pond, a property owned by Emerson. Thoreau spent two years there in pursuit of a simpler life. He later published his experiences to modest success during his lifetime. His writings on Walden Pond have since become a staple of the Transcendentalist Movement and inspiration for many important environmentalist authors. During the following years of Thoreau’s life, he continued to write and advocate for social causes, including his dedication to the abolitionist movement and the use of civil disobedience.
