Louise Saunders was the wife of famed Scribner’s editor Maxwell Perkins and friend of Maxfield Parrish and his wife. When offered the opportunity illustrate Saunders fable, Parrish was delighted at the chance to let his imagination run wild with colorful landscapes. Parrish spent three years working on paintings for “The Knave of Hearts”. Parrish even went as far to build an elaborate castle model in his workroom to help with his process.
Maxfield Parrish (American, 1870-1966)
American painter and illustrator Maxfield Parrish trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and at Drexel Institute of Art. By the 1920s, Parrish was the highest paid commercial artist and muralist in the U.S. He is best known for his illustrations of fantasy landscapes and beautiful young women.
Condition
In very bright and very clean condition. Front cover illustrated pastedown with minor chips and toning. Minor soiling to the custom clampshell case. In overall very good condition.
