Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Spanish, 1547-1616)
Best remembered as the author behind one of the greatest literary works of the 17th century, Miguel Cervantes began his life near Madrid in 1547. He became a soldier in 1570 and was subsequently wounded in the Battle of Lepanto and later captured and held prisoner by the Turks between 1575 and 1580. In both incidences, Cervantes was noted for his bravery under pressure. Though scholars debate as to how much formal education Cervantes received, he is known to have been an avid reader from an early age. Cervantes published the first part of the “Don Quixote” epic in 1605. It shortly became the world’s first best seller, proliferated into 60 different languages. The second portion was published ten years later in 1615. Over four centuries later, Cervantes’ hero Don Quixote continues to steal the hearts of many in search of adventure.

Overall wear from age, occasional holes to the bindings, possibly from past library chains. One small tear to the leather on the spine of volume six. Past bookseller’s label on front pastedown of volume one. Hinges are tight. Minor age toning to the text, in overall very good condition.
