Sir Richard Francis Burton (British, 1821-1890)
Sir Richard Francis Burton was a highly accomplished and intelligent man during a period of great exploration. Though he was regularly thwarted by his own inconsistencies of temperament, he enjoyed opportunities for extensive travel and spent much of his life as a consul in the British ambassadorial service. He learned many languages including Arabic, Gujarati and Hindustani, and he traveled to forbidden cities of Harar and Mecca in an era when it was a death sentence for any non-Muslim who set foot there. Today, he is primarily remembered for his now standard translation of the folktales of “Alf Layla wa Layla” or “The Thousand Nights and a Night,” more commonly referred to in contemporary culture as the “Arabian Nights”.
