Hubert de Givenchy (France, b. 1927 – )
Hubert de Givenchy moved to Paris in 1944 to study. At the age of 17 he began an apprenticeship with the designer Jacque Fath. Less than ten years after arriving in Paris, Givenchy started his own design house with a modest business plan. His debut collection was an immediate hit, featuring much desired separates. His designs highlighted elegance and finely tailored lines. In the 1960s, Givenchy was quick to embrace the younger culture and to integrate shorter hemlines and straighter silhouettes. During his career, Givenchy designed for many celebrity icons, most notably Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as well as Audrey Hepburn for “Funny Face (1957)” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)”. Retrospectives of Givenchy’s work have been shown at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and the Musée Galliera in Paris.
