Franz Kafka (Czech, 1883-1924)

Born in Praque, the capital of the present day Czech Republic, Kafka grew up in a middle-class Jewish family. Though Kafka knew from an early age that he wished to write, his father Hermann had limited tolerance for his son’s creativity. Kafka was stifled by his father’s overbearing personality. Kafka ended up studying law and working in insurance, reserving writing for his free time. However, by 1923, Kafka decided to move to Berlin to focus on his writing full time. Unfortunately, he died shortly afterwards from tuberculosis. Afterwards, Kafka’s friend Max Brod published most of the author’s work posthumously. Kafka lived on in his writing. His stories are still revered for their complicated characters struggling against various powers that be.
