Jack London (American, 1876-1916)
London grew up in a working class family in the San Francsico area. London’s career as an author began after returning from a harrowing voyage on a sealing trip on which a typhoon nearly killed London and the rest of the crew. When London shared his stories with his mother, she suggested he submit to one of the local papers for a writing contest. Despite having only completed an eighth grade formal education, London won the prize, beating out students from Berkeley and Stanford. The experience convinced London to pursue a career as an author. He struggled for many years, until 1899 when he began publishing stories inOverland Monthly. His experiences working for the periodical trained London to make a practice of always writing at least one thousand words a day. He went on to fame and fortune at the age of 27 when his novel, “The Call of the Wild” was published in 1903. He went on to publish more than 50 books in the last sixteen years of his life.
