1-1/2" Carved boxwood with dark patina of a seated monkey covering one eye and his mouth. Signed in inserted medallion underneath. Inset bead eyes. Of all the zodiac animals, the monkey is the most frequently represented in netsuke. Worshipped in both India and China, in Japan the monkey is venerated as the divine messenger of the Shinto deities.
