Emil MIX & Clarence H. SMITH (photographers and Sousa Band Members)
A pair of 4x5inch negatives of Suza, FIJI ISLANDS. - Sousa Band World Tour; taken by Emil Mix or his partner Clarence Smith, during the Pacific leg of the John Philip Sousa Band World Tour: these images can be dated precisely to 5th September 1911. Condition: see images - please note the positive images are digital only and are included for illustration purposes only. This lot includes the original negatives only.
Provenance: Emil Mix (by descent, bought from the estate)
These negatives, generally recording what the Band did and saw when they wer'n't performing, were used by  that Mix and Smith produce RPPC postcards that were available to other band members who wished to send home a record of their extra-ordinary musical round-the-world journey.
Emil Mix, tuba, and Clarence Smith, horn, produced hundreds of RPPCs during the tour: these are very rare as they were apparently just offered to the band members and their friends and families. Their off-duty subject matter means that they have ended up offering an important 'behind-the-scenes' look at life 'on the road' for the Band.
