Various Photographers (Women) Collection of 5 Early Albums of Quality Tintypes and CDV's; Mrs. Laura
Original family albums, and one gift to a teacher from her students. Binding condition varies but photographs are acceptable or better. See images for highlights.Â
Album 1 measures 5.5 x 7.5 inches, leather bound with blind stamped covers and with intact clasps. AEG. Within the title page proclaims it to be The Masonic Auto Photographic Album by the Samuel Bowles and Co. Publishers in Springfield, Mass. Each page provides a decorative mat for a cdv or tintype with a section below each photo for identification (and each includes a copyright by the publisher). Within this album is one loose cdv labeled on the back by G.N. Granniss, Photographer at Exchange Place in Waterbury, CT. Along with the loose cdv are 15 cdv portraits (one wearing a military uniform). 3 are tintype portraits. 12 pages for photos and one pattern sheet. 18 portraits in all (one includes a dog).Â
Album 2 is bound in black stamped leather with gilt "clasp" designs on the front cover and a diamond pattern on back., the remains of brass clasp, AEG, 24 pp. Within are 33 tintypes and 7 photos. The pages serve as mats but have some tears.
Album 3 is stamped leather (rubbed on spine) with 4 white beads on the front cover, 3 on the back, clasp intact. Worn gauffered edges. With is a note dated 1902. 48 photos within. The pages show moderate wear though the cover is loosening. Of the photos, 12 are tintypes and the remaining are cdv/photographs (one has a young man wearing glasses). 4.5 x 5.5 inches. The Hess family.
Album 4 measures 5 x 6 inches, cut design, clasp intact, gauffered gilt edges, 3 beads on front cover, 4 on back, color portrait of tartaned Scot inset on front cover. The binding is loosening, the title page has separated. Within are 42 tintypes and 7 cdvs.  CDV: a young girl with Circassian hair; tintypes of male friendship; boy in striped gown(?);  miniature oval tintypes;  Â
(Early example of a class album?) Album 5 is dis-bound but with the front and back covers. Cut leather binding with gilt design, metal clasps, gilt gauffered edges. On the inside front cover is a hand-written note stated that the album was presented to Mrs. Laura Ralston of Lockport NY, by her pupils in June of 1863. Mrs. Laura Ralston's Seminary for Young Ladies had at least one student who became an important a leader, lecturer, and activist for women's suffrage, MRS. MARY SEYMOUR HOWELL (1844-1913). All the images are of women, likely her students, beautifully dressed. CDV's have blue border within a golden chain The album measures 5.5 x 7 inches. 22 cdvs within.Â
