[Title taken from first page of text:] The Melbourne Invitation Committee extends a most cordial Invitation to the esteemed International Olympic Committee to celebrate the XVI Olympiad in Melbourne, Australia, in 1956. Melbourne: G.W. Green & Sons Pty. Ltd. [and others, no date, but circa 1948].Folio (13 5/8 x 10 5/8ins; 346 x 270mm). Pp. I-XIV printed in brown and black, including three facsimile letters each with an onlaid semi-relief seal; + 63 pages with section titles in brown and 60 half-tone photographic illustrations + 4 folding plates (three printed in colours). Loosely inserted is the original City of Melbourne compliments slip with text in English and French. (Light creasing to folding plates).
Original cream reversed leather binding by Spicers & Detmold Ltd, covers with simple borders in blind, the upper cover with onlaid enamel armorial ‘badge’ by Stokes & Sons Pty. Ltd., original clear celluloid dust-jacket, original padded shaped box (very light soiling to leather, small splits to dust-jacket, some damage to box).
An important piece of Australian Olympic memorabilia, and rare in this condition.
