Charles HOUSTON & Robert BATES.
K2 The Savage Mountain. NY, London, etc: McGraw-Hill Book Company, [copyright 1954]. Octavo (8 ¼ x 5 1/2in; 208 x 140mm). Plates. Original two-tone cloth, dust-jacket (light soiling, small tears to dust-jacket). Provenance: Inscribed by expedition member Robert W. Craig, and dated '3/14/55'; A.B. Reed (signature).
Early printing, signed by an expedition member. An important mountaineering book describing the “incredibly dramatic and heroic story of the Third American Karakoram Expedition that challenged the second highest mountain in the world, the dreaded K2, in the summer of 1953. Considered by many mountain climbers even more difficult and dangerous to scale than Everest, K2 rises in remote Pakistan to an icy 28,250 feet above sea level, less than 800 feet below Everest. This story told by the leader of the 1953 K2 expedition and his associate is one of steadily mounting tension and drama, of an almost unbelievable battle against avalanches, snowstorms, high altitudes, freezing temperatures and monsoon winds. “ (dust-jacket).
