First Edition Hardcover Octavo, bound in maroon covered cloth boards, 384 pages. Gilt titling to the spine only (faded with some wear).
Head/heel and corners are bumped and rubbed, also with some wear along the edges. Beautiful black and white illustrations (portraits/places) throughout, with fold out family tree at rear.
Inscribed by Sinclair Beiles (South African poet) to his wife Marta Proctor on the front end-paper. Slight offsetting can be seen on the front/back end-papers. Overall, both the book and the binding are in good condition.
Daughter of France is a biography of Anne Marie Louise d'Orleans, Duchesse de Montpensier, first cousin to Louis XIV and the greatest heiress in France. Her hand was sought by many princes, including England's Charles II, but she rejected them all until in middle age romance entered her life with disastrous results.
A violent, emotional, generous, foolish, tomboyish, loyal, lovable, vivid character, she still lives for us in the pages of her own memoirs and of many memoirs of the period. Miss Sackville-West has made the fullest use of these and has also been fortunate enough to obtain some illustrations never before reproduced.
Daughter of France recreates for us both the life of a remarkable woman and a fascinating period in French history.
