2. Principles and Practice of Medicine by William Osler - 1978. Pages 1076

First Edition of this fine facsimile of the true first edition printed and issued by D. Appleton in 1892. With the separately published pamphlet of Notes from the Editors, a rich bibliographical and historical source for the work and the discipline of Medicine. Thick, royal 8vo, publisher's original fine dark-blue morocco, lettered and decorated in gilt between raised bands on the spine, the covers with double gilt-fillet ruled borders and gilt tooled corner pieces. All edges gilt.

The first physician-in-chief to Johns Hopkins Hospital, Osler was, in the words of one colleague, "probably the greatest figure in the medical world; the best known, the most influential, the most beloved. . . . His life embodied his precepts, and his students cherished his words." (Johns Hopkins Alumni Magazine, 1921). Osler was likewise known for "the charm of his literary style, his love of literary allusions born of his wide reading, his kindly advice and graceful humor, and his practical common sense combined with high ideals of scholarship and of life." [DAB] Osler's "Practice of Medicine" went through sixteen editions in its 55 years in print. Garrison called it "the best English textbook on the subject in our time." Especially outstanding are chapters on communicable diseases and diseases of the circulatory system. It has remained a cornerstone of high-spot and science collections for the entire century since its initial presentation

3. Restoring a Lost Nose from the Integuments of the Forehead by J. C. Carpue - 1981. Pages 134. Measuring 210 mm x 270 mm. Raised bands on spine, marbled end pages, full leather.

4. The Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus by William Hunter - 1980. Hardcover in full leather with gilt decorations, marbled endpapers. A large book measuring 250 mm x 300 mm.

After Hunter's death his unpublished work was found by his nephew Matthew Baillie; who edited and published it 1794 as "An anatomical description of the human gravid uterus." One of the largest obstetrical atlases, the work was published with life-sized illustrations that were not only accurate but themselves works of art. The author, Dr. William Hunter studied under William Smellie and worked at St. George's Hospital, London. This, Hunter's most important work, was a significant step in the establishment of the field of Obstetrics. Hunter spent more than twenty-five years preparing this atlas. "Not until Smellie (1754) and William Hunter (1774) published their monumental volumes do we actually find illustrations of the foetus in utero which were really observed and faultlessly reproduced from an anatomic point of view"
