Ernest Cole (Photographer), Thomas Flaherty (Text) HOUSE OF BONDAGEThe first edition of this
The first edition of this landmark book in South African photojournalism. Cole fled South African in 1966 to publish this remarkable photo-essay which documents apartheid and features many shocking images of racism. The book was banned in South Africa but created a sensation abroad. An exhibition of his work and the photos in this book a few years ago and mounted by the Hasselblad Foundation was shown at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and abroad and was accompanied by a magnificent book commemorating Cole and his work, as as the original "House of Bondage" is now a collector's item. It is one of only three South African books included in the massive and important work on "The Photo Book" by Parr and Badger (the other two being by David Goldblatt).
An about fine unmarked copy in the original cream linen covered gilt printed boards. In a very good plus dustwrapper which has some slight slight chipping at the top of the spine and the adjacent rear panel, but is otherwise intact and bright.
