This is a fine copy of the Sable Press facsimile edition of the 1840 original with a new frontispiece of O Oakley's 1845 watercolour portrait of the author (who by then was Major Sir William Cornwallis-Harris) from the original in the Africana Museum, Johannesburg, and facsimile reproductions of all the colour plates in the original edition.

Laminated, unclipped, french-fold, colour-illustrated dustjacket, grey cloth-boards with gilt design to the upper face and gilt lettering to the spine, plain cream endpapers, dedication on the frontispiece verso, illustrated title-page, vii pp of prelims, including the contents page and a new introduction by the 1986 publisher, the original frontispiece (Plate I) + 175 pp of b/w illustrated text, plus 29 additional colour plates.

CONDITION. Near-fine throughout. Light foxing on both sides of the back page of the dustjacket. Light shelf-rubbing to upper boards and spine. Ink inscription to the front free endpaper. The gilt design to the upper board is bright. The contents, including all the plates, remain fine - complete, unmarked and undiscoloured.

A lovely copy and the nearest that most of us can get to the original.
