Winsor, Kathleen Forever Amber First published in New York by Macmillan, the UK edition came out
First published in New York by Macmillan, the UK edition came out in the same year (1944) - "produced in complete conformity with the War Economy Agreement", which meant thin paper for the 800 pages of text and conservative typography that included smaller than usual type and no new pages for chapter openings.
This copy is complete, with a tear on one leaf being closed by tape, and clean internally except for an ownership name on the title page. The corners of the green cloth covers are lightly rubbed. A new green Skivertex spine has been added with lettering for the book's title. Despite faint tape marks on the upper board from an earlier repair, the copy now shows well in a bookcase.
Despite being banned as pornographic in several US states, Winsor's book was an immediate best-seller, selling three million copies by the end of 1945 and being made into a 1948 movie. The book is dedicated to "[Second] Lieutenant Robert John Herwig, U S M C R [United States Marine Corps Reserve]". This was Winsor's husband, who received a presidential award for valour, and Google reports as "legend" that Winsor delivered her manuscript on same day as Herwig went to war. From the same source we learn that Winsor herself became a famous movie star and divorced Herwig to marry bandleader Artie Shaw, who had previously been married to Lana Turner as well as to another famous movie star.
Despite the later huge print runs, UK first edition copies, with the war restrictions on production values, are today scarce.
