Chez Daumont Le Cap de Bonne Esperance

This fascinating, seemingly bizarre and uncommon view of Table Bay (with mirror image text in the headline), Table Mountain and surrounds was hand coloured and published by Jean François Daumont (1740 - 1775): a french publisher and printer of vues d'optique, wallpaper, popular prints, and playing-cards.

It was drawn specifically for viewing through a zagroscope. This device was used in the 18th century for 'parlour entertainment'; the zagroscope comprised a lens and mirror, generating a mirror image (mirror image writing below image) and pseud-3D effect - see the image as it would have appeared through the zagroscope (mirror image writing at top).

This print is on firm paper; area within the plate line is in good condition, but the margins are grubby
