The first comprehensive dictionary to define Zulu words in English, compiled by the Right Reverend John W. Colenso, Bishop of Natal.
Published locally in 1861 this is a rare book for its time in such good condition. Colenso was known for his liberal and sometimes progressive attitudes toward the local Zulu peoples.
Original binding – boards and spine intact (quarter leather), with not insignificant wear and rubbing, which adds charm to this tight volume. 552 pages. The title page is intact but any additional frontis pages missing.
Binding creaky due to the age of the paper but still remarkably tight in the hinges. Relatively insignificant foxing to some pages, mainly at the ends, and along the edges. First section loose at bottom, up to end of ‘Advertisement’ which is effectively a preface cum introduction.
