Godfrey, Denis; Anna H Smith (ed) The Enchanted Door; Africana Byways Denis Godfrey's The
Denis Godfrey's The Enchanted Door has been one of the best introductions to Africana book collecting since it was published more than half-a-century ago. Much more modest, but equally attractive in its own way, is Anna H Smith's Africana Byways, one of several of her works written when she was director of the Africana museum and the Johannesburg Public Library.
- Subtitled "A discourse on Africana book-collecting, with notes on famous collectors, collections and books", Godfrey's book was published by Howard Timmins of Cape Town in 1963. This is copy 166 of the first edition, limited to 1200 copies. Dick Friedlander's bookplate. Brodart-covered dustjacket, orange cloth boards, gilt to spine, orange map to endpapers, 255 pp of text and index on wove paper + 14 pp of inserted b/w plates on art paper. 220 x 150 mm. Jacket, binding and contents all Fine.
- Smith's book was published by Ad Donker of Johannesburg in 1976. Leaf-green laid dustjacket, printed in black to the front and spine, green paper-boards, white to spine, matching plain green endpapers, 189 pp of text, with frontispiece and other illustrations paginated with the text. 235 x 160 mm. Overall condition: Very Good.
