Limited edition. 30 pages of text, double page colour frontispiece on tracing paper – the Drakensberg South Africa, 8 full page colour prints, 4 double page colour prints, 4 half page colour prints, 4 full page black and white prints, and one half page black and white print, edges uncut, slight foxing on several pages of text, full red leather binding with decorative gilt on the upper cover and spine, with a mylar protective cover, housed in a marbled paper slip case, a fine copy.

On the half title page in the artist's handwriting and signed by him reads: The prints in this book are built up from a number of small scraps of collected visual information and this special (artists') copy incorporates a cross section of them with some notes on their origin.

The prints draw on landscapes and life with them from Southern Savannah to Northern Mountains. They are hand printed by the artist from copperplates worked by engraving, etching, aquatint and soft ground etching. The colours are printed in intaglio and relief and additional colour is applied to some by hand. The accompanying thoughts trace some influences on our experience of nature by art, science and spiritual inheritance.

The typography and printing of the text is by Will Carter of the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge, and the paper is hand-made at the Richard de Bass Mill in the Auvergne in France.

The edition is hand- bound by George Percival at Leicester and limited to 70 copies. This copy is number 54 and is here signed by the author and artist.

There is a loosely inserted printed note on the endpapers by John Mason.

Also loosely inserted are 2 leaves in the authors hand, one an autobiographical sketch and the other a note which describes how he visited South Africa in 1972 and 1973 where he did the sketches. 'Each visit constituted the most memorable holidays I've ever had'.

He was born in 1915 and educated at Eton College and Trinity College. During the war he didi service with the Royak Engineers. From 1945 -46 he was n art student at St Martins School of Art and Heatherleys Schol of Art. From 1963 – present he is a writer and printmaker in the medium of limited edition had produced books. In Philobiblon no.18 January 1996 which accompanies this volume is an article by Frank Bradlow on Light and the mind's eye pages 7 – 9 where he describes it as the “rarest book in our collection”
