James Percy Fitzpatrick The Outspan: Tales of South Africa. (1897; 1st Edition)

Sir Percy FitzPatrick's The Outspan is an outstanding example of the kind of colonial fiction occasioned by the presence of the motley band of expatriate adventurers who flocked to the South African diamond and goldfields in the last two decades of the 19th century. The title story employs a fictional narrator and evokes the fireside ethos of the oral tale.
