Diamonds and Gold in South Africa
Edward Stanford of Charing Cross with Juta & Co., 1893, green cloth boards, with maps and 32 illustrations, part I; The South African Diamond Fields, part II; The South African Gold Fields, appendices, general index, 242 pages, 15 x 225mm, condition: very good.
Theodore Reunert, an enterprising young engineer from Leeds, and Otto Lenz, an export salesman established the company, Reunert & Lenz , in 1888. The company quickly became South Africa's leading specialists in the new fields of electric lighting and power transmission. They brought electric power to East London, South Africa's first town to use alternating current, and electrified Kimberley and Bloemfontein, and also stations as far afield as Lourenço Marques.
In 1907 the failure of a gas-engine power scheme in Johannesburg proved the perfect opportunity for the company to make its name. With frequent power failures in the city affecting everything including the trams, the crisis in Johannesburg had to be resolved quickly. 'Reunert and Lenz' came to the rescue with a replacement steam-generated power plant in a miraculous six weeks! (Reunert Limited)
