Large hardcover Quarto bound in black leather boards, with bevelled edges and 632 pages. Elaborately gilt titles and decorations on front/rear boards, showing a slave having just broken his chains and a lion subduing a man, five raised band on spine and gilt decoration in between which are fading.
Head and heal are slightly rubbed and there is some minor wear to edges of spine. Outstanding full colour and full page illustrations including full page frontispiece, with a tissue guard.
Illustrated with about 25 plates which are tinged, colour map & title page. Some foxing to edges of frontispiece with all other illustrations being very good condition. All edges gilt and have silk headbands to the spine ends, hinges also strained due to weight.
Foxing on the front/rear endpapers. Overall the binding and the book are in very good condition.
