Original vintage poster published to promote an exhibition of Japanese advertising graphics entitled The Nippon Design Center Tokio at the University of Wuppertal School of Art in Germany from 15 November to 15 December 1965. Striking black and white graphic design featuring a pen dividing the composition in two with the upper half partially showing a hand with the fingers held together by string and the lower half displaying a pattern of grey dots, the title of the exhibition on the pen and stamp style information text on the fingers are in shades of red and the Japanese calligraphic text is stylised like a paper tear in black above. The Nippon Design Center NDC was formed in 1959 "to further develop and improve the quality of advertising design in Japan" with the backing of Asahi Breweries, Asahi Kasei, Nippon Steel, Toshiba, Toyota Motor, Nikon, NKK and Nomura Securities. The Werkkunstschule (previously the School of Arts and Crafts since 1896) was formed by the School of Applied Arts and Institute of Industrial Design in 1949, forming the Higher Technical School for the Graphic Arts Industry in 1963; in 1972 the engineering, textile and graphics schools were brought together to form the new Bergische Universitat Wuppertal / University of Wuppertal.
