Original vintage theatre advertising poster for the play Francesca de Rimini at the Theatre Sarah Bernhardt in Paris, now named the Theatre de la Ville. The famous French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923) produced there from 1899 for nearly two decades. Bernhardt starred in some of the most popular French plays of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including La Dame Aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, Ruy Blas by Victor Hugo, FĂ©dora and La Tosca by Victorien Sardou, and L'Aiglon by Edmond Rostand, who called her "the queen of the pose and the princess of the gesture", while Hugo praised her "golden voice". She made several theatrical tours around the world, and was one of the first prominent actresses to make sound recordings and to act in motion pictures. The five act play featured, Francesca de Rimini (1902) was written by Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909) and a friend of Bernhardt's. Translated by Marcel Schwob and scene music by Gabriel Pierne. The artwork features golden medallions engraved with the profile of three protagonists - Francesca da Rimini, Francesco and Giovanni Malatesta. Printed by F. Champenois of Paris. A copy of the poster is held by the Musee Carnavalet in Paris, dedicated to the history of the city. Condition: Acceptable condition, tears restored, linen backed. Country of printing: France , designer: Edouard Detaille, G. Clairin, R. Latique, Jumbon, size (cm): 113.5x82.5, year of printing: 1902.
