London
Original vintage advertising poster for the English stage pantomime production of Dick Whittington, featuring a great colourful artwork showing Dick Whittington (played here by a young woman, as pantomime traditionally employs gender-crossing actors), sitting alongside his black cat, with the city of London depicted in the background. This pantomime was based on the story of Dick Whittington and His Cat, the English folklore surrounding the real-life Richard Whittington (c. 1354–1423), wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London. The legend describes his rise from poverty-stricken childhood with the fortune he made through the sale of his cat to a rat-infested country. Since the pre-Victorian era, the story has been a favourite subject of British pantomime, especially during Christmas season. This three-sheets poster was printed by the theatrical printers Taylor's of Wombwell, in Yorkshire, who were leading lithographic printers of posters for provincial theatres during the 1930s. Year of printing: 1930s, country of printing: UK, designer: Unknown, dimensions (cm): 224x101. Very good condition, restored folds, 3 sheets poster backed on linen.
